Strong entry for Champagne Stakes

04/08/2004 - 12:37:05
Doncaster’s Group Two Champagne Stakes on September 10 has attracted 124 entries, including Mark Johnston’s ultra-impressive Glorious Goodwood winner Shamardal.

The Giant’s Causeway colt is the current favourite for next year’s 2000 Guineas after his authoritative two-and-a-half length victory over Wilko in the Group Two Vintage Stakes on only the second run of his life.

Another notable entrant for the forthcoming seven-furlong event at the St Leger meeting is Godolphin’s Superlative Stakes winner Dubawi.

The two-year-old son of Dubai Millennium won praise for his battling qualities when holding off Henrik in the Group Three event at Newmarket last month.

Godolphin have also entered the highly-regarded Belenus who won a maiden at the same course.

Other entries include Henry Cecil’s Newmarket maiden winner Camacho, the John Gosden-trained Iceman, who won Royal Ascot’s Coventry Stakes and Aidan O’Brien’s Anglesey Stakes winner Oratorio.
