Kenyan coach killed

04/08/2004 - 13:50:40
Kenya’s first Olympic rowing team has suffered a tragic blow ahead of the Athens Games with the death of head coach Senior Sergeant Juvenalis Gitau.

Father-of-two Gitau was killed in a car accident just a day before the team was scheduled to depart for Greece.

Gitau had been coaching single sculler Ibrahim Githaiga, who will be the first Kenyan rower to compete in an Olympics.

Githaiga has been training with the Dutch team and they will continue to give him guidance during the Games.

Sief Patwa, the chairman of the Kenyan Rowing and Canoeing Association, said: “We’ll go to Athens with memories. We’ll be dedicating our participation to him.”
