Average farm incomes in Ireland increased by 0.9% last year, according to the Teagasc’s annual national farm survey.

The agriculture and food development body said average farm incomes in 2003 were just over €15,000.

A breakdown of the figures showed that full-time farm incomes increased by 5% to an average of €29,000 during the year, while just under 10% of Irish farms were found to have an income in excess of €40,000.

Three quarters of these were involved in dairy farming.

Almost 40% of farms were also found to have an average income of less than €6,500.

Most of these were part-time farms with another source of income.
