UN resolution on Sudan welcomed by Concern
01/08/2004 - 12:41:39Concern's chief executive, Tom Arnold, has welcomed the UN Security Council resolution on Sudan.
The UN Security Council adopted a US-backed resolution that implicitly threatens sanctions against the Sudanese government if it does not rein in Arab militias blamed for atrocities in the western Darfur region.
He warned, however, that premature sanctions could lead the Sudanese government to block essential aid to the region.
He has called on the international community to keep up the pressure on the Sudanese government in the interim period.
For the next 30 days, aid should be the priority, and immediate access to the region should be granted, he said.
