Three Irish tourists injured in Prague blast

01/08/2004 - 16:15:32
Three Irishmen were among those injured in Prague today when attackers detonated a bomb in a packed tourist area.

Eight people in all were taken to hospital, but none of the injuries was thought to be life-threatening.

Five British people were also among the injured.

At least two of the Britons and the three Irish were sitting together at a café in the centre of the historic city when the explosion went off.

The bomb exploded under a car outside a casino at about 12.30pm (10.30am) in a popular pedestrian zone in downtown Prague where there are many restaurants and cafes.

“We can rule out it was a terrorist attack,” police spokeswoman Iva Knolova told The Associated Press.

“It was a criminal act,” she said. She refused to elaborate.
