Rabbitte: ‘NIB report paints shocking picture of dishonesty’
30/07/2004 - 11:49:58Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte has said the High Court inspectors’ report into practices at National Irish Bank paints “a truly shocking picture of dishonesty, tax evasion and theft”.
Mr Rabbitte said the findings of the report raised serious questions for the Central Bank, which was responsible for supervising NIB at the time.
“Dishonesty and illegality concerning a bank is far more serious than in the normal enterprise because that trust is the cornerstone of the relationship between bank and customer,” he said.
“If that trust breaks down, the entire basis of the relationship between the banking system and the public is put at risk.”
