Woody's decline in Anything Else
Anything Else
Director: Woody Allen
Cast: Woody Allen, Christina Ricci, Jason Biggs, Danny DeVito, Anthony Arkin
Cert: 12.
The awful truth dawns; Allen has lost his edge.
Gone are the really clever and sharp-witted scripts, gone the telling observations on the human condition.
We are returned to Allen’s much-loved New York where we meet a burdened and blocked writer (the misplaced Biggs) who is taken up by fellow writer Allen, with a romance somewhere in the background (with the always-interesting Ricci); in a story which goes nowhere, at least nowhere interesting.
Allen can find no interesting new twists to entice us or clever one-liners to entertain us or intriguing characters to engage us.
We may be watching the beginning of the decline of the once-brilliant Allen.
Star Rating: 2/5
