Montoya produces quick lap

24/07/2004 - 13:02:19
Juan Pablo Montoya took the honours in pre-qualifying for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim today.

The Williams driver earned the right to go out last in qualifying proper thanks to a lap of one minute 13.391 seconds.

Williams dominated the session with Antonio Pizzonia – standing in for the injured Ralf Schumacher – setting an impressive lap which was just 0.031secs slower than his more experienced team-mate.

Jenson Button, who will suffer a 10-place grid penalty after an engine change on his BAR yesterday, was 0.144secs behind Montoya in third.

Fernando Alonso was fourth for Renault, one place ahead of McLaren’s David Coulthard.

World champion Michael Schumacher endured a lacklustre lap which put him 11th, with Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello also struggling in 12th.
