McGovern moves to Scotland
Longford Town defender Brian McGovern has joined newly-promoted Scottish Premier League side Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
The 6'4" former Irish U21 player can play either centre-back or right-back and would have joined Caley in the autumn of 2002 had it not been for the transfer window being closed.
Instead, the former Arsenal and Norwich man joined Peterborough, from where he returned home to Ireland and Longford Town in the spring of 2003 after an initial short spell at St Patrick's Athletic.
ICT manager John Robertson watched McGovern, a member of Longford's FAI Cup-winning team last season, in action against Dublin City at the weekend and the player did not travel to Liechtenstein for tonight's UEFA Cup tie against FC Vaduz.
Longford boss Alan Matthews is looking for compensation from the Scottish outfit, but in the meantime he has to find a way to halt his side’s desperate run of form, which has seen them go six matches without a win.
They play the Liechtenstein Cup holders tonight at their Rheinpark stadium in a UEFA Cup qualifying round first-leg tie, on the back of a demoralising eircom League defeat to bottom side Dublin City, a loss which drew them closer to the Premier Division relegation zone.
Aside from McGovern’s absence, Paul Keegan and Brian Byrne are definitely ruled out due to injury.
