Allardyce fined for ref outburst

15/07/2004 - 18:47:40
Bolton boss Sam Allardyce has been fined £1,500 (€2,250) and warned about his future conduct following his controversial comments about referee Mike Riley’s handling of last season’s Carling Cup Final.

Allardyce was aggrieved at some of Riley’s decisions during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough at the Millennium Stadium on February 29, and was unable to contain his frustration at the end of the game.

“We have always had a problem with Mike Riley in our recent history. He hasn’t been very kind to us to say the least,” he said in the wake of his team’s disappointing defeat.

“Unfortunately, I have to say that he has lived up to his reputation as far as we are concerned.”

At a hearing in Manchester today, the case against Allardyce was proven, although the punishment amounts to little more than a rap over the wrist for the popular Trotters chief.
