Threshold calls for action on housing
15/07/2004 - 13:51:39Threshold has urged the Government to take a range of measures to tackle the growing housing crisis in Ireland.
The organisation said today the Government should double the amount of houses being built under the social housing scheme, withdraw restrictions on rent allowance and implement the Residential Tenancies Bill.
It also said the Government should carry out the reforms recommended by the Oireachtas committee on the constitution and should put homeless action plans on a statutory basis to oblige local authorities and other agencies to eliminate homelessness.
Threshold said such measures were urgently needed as 48,000 households were currently on local authority housing waiting lists and 60,000 households were dependent on rent supplements in the private rented sector.
