Employment in pub sector up 28% since 1999
15/07/2004 - 12:28:41Employment in pubs and other licensed premises has increased by 28% over the past five years, according to a study commissioned by the drinks industry.
The study, carried out by Dublin City University and the Economic and Social Research Institute, found that more than 100,000 people are now working in the sector.
It also found that pub turnover had increased by 56% since 1999, but more than half of pubs had annual sales of less than €200,000.
The study said there was no need for any new pub licences in Ireland as there is one pub for every 335 people in the country, three times as many as the UK.
