The Red Hot Chilli Peppers have been confirmed as one of the leading musical attractions in the world after shocking promoters with ticket sales of $17m (€25.4m) - for just three shows.

The Los Angeles rockers wowed crowds at their sold-out concerts in London's Hyde Park on 19, 20, and 25 June, shifting a total of 258,000 tickets, in addition to 169,000 sold for dates in Manchester, England, Cardiff, Wales, and Edinburgh, Scotland.

The European president of promoters Clear Channel says: "It blew our minds. The first show sold out in a couple of hours, then we put up a second show and it went clean just as quickly."

He adds the Scar Tissue band could have filled up Hyde Park several more times had the venue been available.

He says: "I think we could've done another two or even three… The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an incredibly huge band in Europe."

Singer Anthony Kiedis and his group now plan to celebrate their massive European success with a live double album of their Hyde Park gigs.
