Riddle of unmanned mini-sub
An unmanned mini-submarine found off Sweden’s western coast in June is one reported missing by Britain’s Royal Navy, a Swedish defence spokeswoman said in Stockholm.
But a spokesman for the Royal Navy said they were not certain it was theirs.
The 1,100-pound yellow mini-sub, a PAP Mark 5, was found floating in the Kattegatt Sea, between Sweden and Denmark, by Swedish coast guard officials on June 17. Equipped with sonar equipment and cameras, it’s worth an estimated £550,000 (€824,100).
“We suspected from the beginning that it was British, but now we have had it confirmed,” spokeswoman Marie Tisaeter said, without elaborating.
The mini-sub was reported missing by the Royal Navy in early May when the HMS Penzance, a minesweeper in a NATO exercise, said it failed to return to the ship. About 20 countries use the French-made, eight feet long mini-sub.
