Hotel workers' strike threat to Olympics
Hotel workers in Athens staged a 24-hour strike today to demand Olympic bonuses for extra work during the upcoming games – and threatened more walkouts nearer the games.
The Union of Greek Archaeologists also held its own day-long strike to press for Olympic payments from the government, which is trying to hold the line on skyrocketing Olympic costs – projected to top €9.9bn.
Unlike the archaeologists, the hotel workers’ unions must negotiate with private hotel operators – not the government, which is only giving bonuses to the security forces.
The hotel employees threatened more walkouts in the countdown to the August 13 to 29 games if they do not get the bonuses they are seeking.
Public transportation workers have scheduled a strike from 11 am to 5 pm tomorrow to demand Olympic bonuses.
