Smertin back with Chelsea
07/07/2004 - 10:44:26Russia captain Alexei Smertin will be part of Chelsea’s squad this season, chief executive Peter Kenyon has confirmed.
The midfielder was signed last August for £3.8m (€5.7m) from Bordeaux and promptly sent out on loan to Portsmouth.
He played 33 games for the south-coast side and captained his country at Euro 2004 where injuries meant he played in defence.
Kenyon said: “He’s coming back as part of the squad and he’ll be vying for a place like everyone else.
“He had a good season, going into the Premier League at Portsmouth, and we’re delighted to have him back.”
