USI seeks stricter implementation of minimum wage

07/07/2004 - 07:27:58
The Union of Students in Ireland has called for stricter implementation of the minimum wage and an end to the lower minimum wage for under-18s.

The USI said many employers were failing to pay their workers the minimum rate of €7 per hour, with restaurants and shops among the biggest offenders.

It also said it was unfair that people under the age of 18 are not entitled to the same minimum wage.

Research has shown that one fifth of students work more than 20 hours a week to cover their living expenses.
