Wal-Mart seeks US appeal
07/07/2004 - 08:08:06Wal-Mart Stores has asked a US federal appeals court to review a judge’s order approving class-action status for a sex-discrimination lawsuit.
The judge’s ruling last month gave representation to as many as 1.6 million female current and former Wal-Mart workers.
The lawsuit alleges the retail giant set up a system that frequently pays its female workers less than their male counterparts for comparable jobs and bypasses them for promotions.
If the appeals court does not overturn US District Judge Martin Jenkins’s ruling, the case will become the largest private civil rights lawsuit in US history. The San Francisco-based appeals court did not indicate if it would consider Wal-Mart’s petition.
