Tánaiste launches Enterprise Strategy Group report

07/07/2004 - 15:50:42
Tánaiste Mary Harney has warned Ireland must adapt if we are to succeed in continuing economic growth.

The Tánaiste was speaking at the launch of the Report of the Enterprise Strategy Group, prepared under the Chairmanship of Eoin O’Driscoll.

The Tánaiste indicated that she had appointed a senior official of her Department to chair an Inter-Departmental Group which will report back to Government within three months as to how best to give effect to the recommendations.

“At that point, an implementation strategy will be put in place,” the Tánaiste concluded.

The Tánaiste said: “The report acknowledges the tremendous economic success which this country has enjoyed over the past decade.

"But critically, the Report also highlights our weaknesses and our failings and demonstrates that we cannot hope to succeed in the future if we become complacent about the past.”

She added: “The key message above all is that we must adapt and develop our strengths if we are to succeed in tomorrow’s knowledge economy.”

The Tánaiste continued: “Ireland’s economy has performed exceptionally well over the last decade and we have built a world class reputation across a range of technologies. The challenge now is to maintain and grow this performance."
