Owen set to sign new Reds contract

03/07/2004 - 09:21:20
Michael Owen is expected to sign a two-year contract extension with Liverpool in the wake of Steven Gerrard’s decision to commit himself to the club.

The England striker has just a year left on his current deal, meaning the Anfield club would have been compelled to sell him rather than lose him for nothing next summer.

The contract is believed to be worth around £4m (€6m), making him the highest paid player at Liverpool.

With Owen set to put pen-to-paper in the next few days, it will be the second piece of good news inside a week for new Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez with club captain Gerrard publicly committing himself to the Merseysiders.

Gerrard had been the centre of attention by Chelsea and the midfielder was thought to be on his way to Stamford Bridge.

The duo are regarded by Liverpool fans as fundamental to the club’s chances in the Champions League and the Premiership this season.
