McSweeney run gets home crowd buzzing
Ailis McSweeney was the first Irish athlete today to make an impact at the Cork City Sports as she was placed in the women's 100m
McSweeney of UCC Athletic Club was a popular figure with the home crowd at the Mardyke arena.
Running from lane 6 in the Barrys Tea 100m, the Carrigtohilll native produced a superb display to come home in 11.67secs, finishing third behind winner Vida Anim of Ghana and Janette Kwakye of England.
McSweeney's run overshadowed that of compatriot Ciara Sheehy, who was pushed back into fourth place with a time of 11.76secs.
Meanwhile Gary Ryan equaled the Irish national record in the SuperValu Men's 100m today.
Ryan's time of 10.35secs equals Paul Brizzel's Irish record. Brizzel actually finished third in today's race.
