Jury fails to reach decision in Garda assault trial
03/07/2004 - 08:35:15The jury in the trial of a garda accused of assaulting a Reclaim the Streets marcher in Dublin two years ago was discharged yesterday after failing to reach a verdict.
Garda Paul Tallon of Mountjoy Garda Station, had pleaded not guilty to assault causing harm to Fergal Leddy on May 6, 2002.
It was day-eight of the trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Judge Yvonne Murphy remanded Garda Tallon on continuing bail to July 16 when a date for a new trial could be set.
The jury of six men and six women told Judge Murphy it was deadlocked after considering its verdict for during almost four hours which it again viewed some of the video footage of the event and was told it could return a majority verdict.
