Concern raises €1m through Sudan appeal

03/07/2004 - 08:50:35
Concern has announced that over €1m has been raised for its Sudan appeal.

The relief agency is thanking the public for their generosity following their appeal in early June. The appeal was launched in early June to raise money for the humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

Tom Arnold, chief executive of Concern, will depart for Darfur today where he will assess the full extent of the crisis.

He says Concern will then move to mount what will be one of the largest relief operations in its recent history.

The Prime Minister of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, is due to issue a joint statement with the UN later today on what action is being taken to stem the country's spiralling humanitarian crisis.

UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, says Sudan's government has promised to "remove all obstacles" to ease the crisis.

Speaking after a tour of the Darfur region, Mr Annan called on the government to disarm the Arab militias accused of terrorising the area's inhabitants.

Some one million refugees have already fled the region. The UN has warned that at least 10,000 refugees could die from famine and disease unless allowed to return home.
