Stansted planes diverted by cracks in runway

29/06/2004 - 09:32:41
Cracks in the runway were blamed today for the diversion of 13 planes bound for Stansted Airport.

Incoming aircraft were re-routed to Luton Airport yesterday after a departing pilot reported seeing damage to the surface of the runway at around 4.30pm.

An airport spokesman said engineers quickly fixed the problem and by 6pm flights were returning to normal.

He said outbound flights had not been affected by the problem and at no point were passengers in any danger.

The spokesman said the problem had now been fixed and schedules were back to normal.
