Sharon escapes injury in rocket attack

29/06/2004 - 16:27:59
Palestinian militants fired a new barrage of homemade rockets into southern Israel today while Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was visiting the area.

Local officials said there were no casualties.

The officials said at least three rockets landed near Sderot, bringing to five the number of missiles to hit the area today.

The attacks came a day after a similar barrage killed two Israelis in Sderot, including a three-year-old boy.

A senior official confirmed Sharon was in the town at the time of the attack and was not harmed. The prime minister was in Sderot to meet with the boy’s family and local dignitaries.

“We don’t plan to ignore what happened here. The security services have begun taking actions to prevent the firing of these missiles,” Sharon said.

“We are determined to take wide-ranging actions to ensure that what happened here yesterday will not recur,” he said.

The Israeli army has launched a new offensive into northern Gaza to prevent such attacks.

It was unclear whether militants knew Sharon was in the area.
