Tube strike goes ahead after talks breakdown
29/06/2004 - 15:36:02A 24-hour strike on London Underground will go ahead from this evening after the failure of last-minute talks aimed at settling a dispute over pay and conditions.
Thousands of drivers, signallers and maintenance workers will walk out from 6.30pm, causing travel chaos for millions of people.
Tube services, used by three million people a day, will run down within a few hours of the strike starting and will be crippled throughout tomorrow.
A final attempt to break the deadlocked row was made today when LU managers met officials from the Rail Maritime and Transport Union.
But the two sides remained at loggerheads over a pay deal described by LU as “very good”, giving a two-year increase worth 6.75%.
