McGinley four shots off qualifying lead

28/06/2004 - 11:41:56
Ireland's Paul McGinley, match-winning hero of the last Ryder Cup match, started with a two-under-par 70 in qualifying for the British Open at Sunningdale today.

McGinley shot his round of 70 on the Old Course and had to wait to see what that left him needing to do in the afternoon round.

American Rob Rashell set the early target for the star-studded field in the qualifying competition.

Rashell scored a five-under-par 66 on the New Course as the 120-man battle for 15 places at Royal Troon began.

The competition has not met with universal approval amongst the players, especially those who played the French Open at the weekend and are also taking part in the European Open at the K Club near Dublin this week.

Other stars on view included Bernhard Langer, Jesper Parnevik, Jose Maria Olazabal and Justin Rose.
