Taxi drivers still want seatbelt compromise

Taxi drivers are still trying to reach a compromise with Transport Minister Seamus Brennan over his order that they be required to wear seatbelts at all times.

Taxi drivers are opposed to the measure on the grounds that it could compromise their safety.

Vincent Kearns of the National Taxi Drivers Union said today that his members had no problem with wearing seat-belts per se, but needed to be able to act quickly if they felt threatened.

He said he would be raising the matter with Mr Brennan at a meeting tomorrow and hoped the minister would agree to compromise.
