Bush visit to be biggest every Irish security job

The Army has stated that the security operation for this weekend’s visit of US President George W Bush will be the largest in the history of the State.

This was revealed at the publication of the Defence Forces annual report for 2003. It said the low-point of the year was the death of Sgt Derek Mooney in a traffic accident in Liberia, where he was on peacekeeping duty.

The annual report revealed that a further 250 personnel left the Defence Forces last year as part of a drive to reduce troop numbers from their current level of 8,000.
