Financials survive early slump

The financials recovered from a morning slump to drive the ISEQ index up 26.98 to close at 5353.11 today.

After heavy trading, both Bank of Ireland and AIB were up. BoI gains 8c to close at 10.85, while AIB was up 17c at 12.52.

Meanwhile betting giant Paddy Power today announced at the company AGM increased turnover and profits for 2004.

Chairman Fintan Drury said turnover has increased by approximately 18% in comparison to the same period in 2003. Shares in the company closed us 23c at €9.43.

Elsewhere Heiton shares were unchanged at €6.60 after an eventful few days for the company.

Pharamceutical Elan is back on the rise, up 9c to €18.29 after light trading. It was announced yesterday that Hi-Tech Pharmacal Co has acquired, from Elan, the rights to market and distribute painkilling drug Naprelan in the US.

Ryanair closed down 4c at €4,51 despite welcoming today's legislation which could lead to the break up of Aer Rianta.
