Pay agreement talks set to resume today

Trade unions and employers are due to resume talks on a new national pay deal later today.

Speaking ahead of the talks, the employers’ body IBEC has accused the unions of seeking unrealistic pay increases on the basis of productivity growth.

It also said a wide gap would have to be bridged if agreement was to be reached between both sides.

IBEC spokesman Brendan McGinty said: “The trade unions have adopted an unrealistic position.

"When inflation was high, they wanted employers to deliver increases at least in line with that.

"Now, when inflation is low, they’re trying to suggest some other formula which really is a ruse on which they’re basing unrealistic expectations.”
