Examiner poll predicts Brady seat

02/06/2004 - 07:45:46
An opinion poll published this morning has predicted that Fianna Fail’s Royston Brady is set to win a European Parliament seat in Dublin at the June 11 elections.

The Irish Examiner/Prime Time poll put support for the Dublin Lord Mayor at 16%, just behind the frontrunner, Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell, on 17%.

The poll showed existing MEPs Pronsiais de Rossa (Labour) and Patricia McKenna (Greens) both securing 13% support in the four-seat constituency, just ahead of Fianna Fail’s Eoin Ryan and Sinn Féin’s Mary Lou McDonald, who both secured 12%.

The Labour Party’s Ivana Bacik was one point further back on 11%.

The opinion poll also suggested that Fine Gael was likely to suffer major losses in Dublin at the local elections, which also take place on June 11.

The poll put support for the party at 14%, down from 20% five years ago. It also suggested that Fianna Fail was not set to suffer any major losses in Dublin, despite its vote falling from 32% to 29%.

Sinn Féin, meanwhile, appeared to be in line for significant gains, with its vote increasing from 5% to 14%.

The poll also predicted advances for the Green Party (11%) and the Labour Party (21%), but the Progressive Democrats vote was down from 5% to just 3%.

Elsewhere, 53% of respondents to the poll said they would support the Government’s citizenship referendum, while 33% said they would oppose it.
