PIAB unveils injury awards structure

02/06/2004 - 17:20:13
A person who fractures their skull at work and loses consciousness could claim up to €129,000 under the Personal Injuries Assessment Board's compensation guide, published today.

A claimant who suffers a soft tissue injury – such as whiplash – could receive €78,400 if a 'serious and permanent neck condition' is diagnosed, while those who are awarded compensation for a 'serious and permanent back condition' could be entitled to a maximum of €69,700.

The 'Book of Quantum' sets out entitlements under the new PIAB structure and also takes into account financial losses such as wages and medical expenses.

It was compiled by independent, internationally-recognised consultants, and data in cases dating back to January 2003 has been provided from courts, insurers and self-insured sectors.

The PIAB was set up to give a guide to compensation payments that should be awarded in the event of injury.

It is hoped that the successful working of the new guidelines will also help to reduce insurance premiums.
