German retail sales up

German retail sales in April were up by 2.5% from March, the first monthly increase since October last year.

The news was welcomed by the Bundesbank as the German economy has suffered from weak domestic consumption.

The Eurozone's largest economy faces an uncertain future as evidence from other data indicates that German consumers are remaining cautious.

On a year-on-year basis, sales declined 1.8%.

Bundesbank data is thought to give the more optimistic readings as they cover a wider basis and include cars.
