Durkan: ‘McCabe controversy exposes SF’s selfishness’

13/05/2004 - 07:53:06
SDLP leader Mark Durkan has said the controversy over the possible early release of the killers of Garda Jerry McCabe exposes Sinn Féin’s selfishness.

Mr Durkan said Sinn Féin was not interested in implementing the Good Friday Agreement or ensuring equality for nationalists, but was instead focused on its own narrow interests.

He said the prisoner release scheme contained in the agreement was legitimate because everybody signed up to it, but since then, "a string of sub-deals, side deals and shabby deals" had been negotiated in secret.

The DUP’s Jim Allister, meanwhile, has called on the Taoiseach not to release the four men convicted of killing Garda McCabe before their full sentences have expired.
