German economic growth exceeds expectations

Germany's economy grew by 0.4% in the first three months of 2004 from the final quarter in 2003.

German gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.4% from January to March this year, according to the federal statistics office, Destatis.

This figure exceeded Bundesbank estimates.

They had predicted a slower growth rate of 0.25% in the 12-country euro zone's largest economy.
