Bush imposes sanctions on Syria

President George Bush today imposed a ban on all United States exports to Syria except for food and medicine, according to two congressional offices briefed by the administration on the measures.

The congressional offices said the president signed the order and expected a public announcement soon.

The export ban and other measures follow long-standing complaints by the US government that Syria is supporting militant groups and is failing to stop guerrillas from entering neighbouring Iraq.
