DUP wants ceasefire monitors to be given more powers

11/05/2004 - 08:28:23
The Democratic Unionist Party has called for the Independent Monitoring Commission to be given more powers to penalise political parties with links to paramilitary organisations.

The DUP made the call after a meeting with the commission yesterday.

The party said it had used the meeting to highlight its concern about ongoing criminal activity by paramilitary groups and the danger of a mafia culture developing in the North.

The SDLP also met with the IMC yesterday and said afterwards that unionists must accept the fact that loyalists were responsible for most of the ongoing paramilitary violence.

It also called on Sinn Féin to face up to the full extent of IRA violence.
