Spain wants Nato to fly over royal wedding
Spain has asked Nato to lend it an AWACS reconnaissance plane to boost security for Crown Prince Felipe’s wedding in Madrid this month, a newspaper said today.
The Spanish defence ministry declined to comment on the report in El Mundo.
The security plan devised for the wedding on May 22, which comes two months after Islamic militants killed 191 people in the Madrid railway bombings - includes closing the air space over Madrid and suspending a EU accord that eliminated passport checks at borders.
F-18 warplanes are to patrol the skies over Madrid, according to the newspaper El Pais.
Some 10,000 police will fan out over the city’s streets, especially the still-undisclosed route of a procession the bride and groom are to make after the wedding.
The prince, 35, is to marry Leticia Ortiz, 31, a former anchorwoman for Spanish state-run television.
