Solskjaer targets summer fitness regime

04/05/2004 - 15:08:12
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is determined to prove he can remain a big player at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United striker has seen his progress curtailed after a knee operation last September.

But he is aiming to embark on a strenous fitness programme in the summer so he can be in the best possible shape for the new season.

Solskjaer made only his seventh league start of the campaign in the defeat by Blackburn at the weekend.

He said: “I am very positive about the future. I am still getting my match fitness.

“Every day I work hard following the medical advice and I don’t think it will stop me from playing any more.

“It has been hard to catch up. I have been preparing for games and you don’t get to do the work as you would like.

“This time I am looking forward to the pre-season to get back to what I was before this season.

“I am not going to sit back and relax. I will be working hard to get back. You are never glad when a season is over.

“You want to improve as a player and every minute here is a chance to prove to the manager that you are still capable of playing for the club.”

United have lost three of their last four games and nine in all in the league.

They look likely to miss out on second spot as Chelsea are four points clear with two games to go.

Solskjaer said: “The last couple of games have been a bit disappointing. I am surprised and disappointed to have lost so many games.

“We are a better team than that. We need to look forward. Arsenal have been brilliant this year.”

The Norwegian has dismissed speculation there is unrest in the camp.

“Some players read the papers but we know the truth, ” he said.

“We know what is happening and there is a good team spirit here, so it’s not affecting anyone.”
