School evacuated after security alert
A school in the North was evacuated today after a suspect package was found near the school which also had a petrol bomb thrown at it.
Exams at the school in Castlewellan, Co Down, were also disrupted because of the security alert.
Around 20 pupils from St Malachy’s High School were unable to get to class in time for the Key Stage 3 English test due to a hoax package found at a republican memorial in the town. They sat the exam later.
A petrol bomb was also thrown at the school but failed to explode.
Principal Nuala Cunningham hit out at those behind the attacks.
“There are 970 pupils at this school who have had their education disrupted,” she said.
“We talk about Key Stage 3 English today, there’s GCSE exams just 10 days away.
“I am absolutely heartbroken that anybody would compromise the youth of Northern Ireland like this.”
