Drink-drivers to be disqualified on the spot

04/05/2004 - 09:14:05
The cabinet has reportedly approved legislation that will see motorists caught drink-driving disqualified on the spot without going to court.

Reports this morning said the legislation was approved by the cabinet last week and is due to take effect from July 1.

Under the proposed legislation, motorists caught above a certain alcohol limit would reportedly be disqualified for six months and automatically fined up to €2,000.

These motorists would still have the option of going to court, where they could be disqualified for up to two years.

This morning’s reports said the new measures, which were contained in the Road Traffic Bill, were designed to free up court time and would be introduced at the same time as random breath-testing.
