20,000 more deleted from NI electoral register

A further 20,000 names have been deleted from the North’s electoral register due to new voter registration rules, according to figures released today.

The new rules, which were introduced ahead of last November’s Assembly election, originally reduced the voter register by 211,000 people, or 16% of eligible voters.

However, figures released today showed a further 20,000 names had since been wiped off the list.

Sinn Féin has claimed that the rules were discriminatory as they made it more difficult for young people, disabled people and the poor to get their names on the register.
