Rain hits Italian Open

30/04/2004 - 07:13:21
Heavy rain today forced play to be suspended in the Italian Open in Milan.

The second round was due to begin at 7.30am local time but the overnight downpour and continuing rain this morning left parts of the Castello di Tolcinasco course under water.

Tournament director Mike Stewart was waiting for the rain to stop before he could assess if and when play would be able to start.

With the rain continuing to fall there was no prospect of play starting in the foreseeable future and the second round would certainly not be finished on time this evening.

The forecast was not encouraging either with rain predicted for the next few days.

Sheffield Mark Roe and France’s Gregory Havret share the lead after the first round, both players carding eight-under-par 64s to lead by one over New Zealand’s Michael Campbell and Sweden’s Christopher Hanell.
