Security operation for EU accession summit gets underway today
30/04/2004 - 08:24:20A massive security operation is due to get underway today ahead of this weekend’s EU accession summit in Dublin.
Around 5,000 gardaí and 2,500 soldiers are expected to be on duty in the capital during the weekend. The majority will be tasked with protecting EU dignitaries during functions at Áras an Uachtaráin and Farmleigh House.
Both buildings have already been surrounded with security fences and razor wire and the entire Phoenix Park is expected to be sealed off tonight for a period of 36 hours.
The gardaí have claimed that up to 300 violent protestors are planning to start a riot during anti-EU protests at the park on Saturday.
