Seal sanctuary condemns mass cull in Canada
14/04/2004 - 08:06:05The Irish Seal Sanctuary has condemned Canada’s decision to approve a cull of one million seals over the next three years.
The mass slaughter got underway on Monday.
The quota for such culls had been reduced to around 15,000-a-year following an international campaign by animal rights activists.
However, Canada increased the quota last year, saying the cull was necessary to protect fish stocks and the livelihoods of local hunters.
The Irish Seal Sanctuary, however, has claimed that the cull is unnecessary and will distort the natural balance of marine life.
It has also called on Foreign Affairs Minister Brian Cowen to lodge a protest over the matter with the Canadian government.
