Former Real IRA leader granted temporary release from jail

Michael McKevitt, the man jailed last year for directing the activities of the Real IRA, has reportedly been granted temporary leave from prison to tend to his terminally ill mother.

Reports this morning said the 53-year-old was released from jail yesterday afternoon and no date had been set for his return.

Mr McKevitt, who is believed to have been the chief-of-staff of the Real IRA, is serving a 20-year prison term for membership of an illegal organisation and directing the activities of that organisation.
