Penalty points review possible over non-receipt of notices
02/04/2004 - 06:56:09The operation of the penalty points system may have to be reviewed because of an inability by gardaí to prove whether or not motorists actually received notification of offences.
Five motorists had their cases dismissed yesterday after claiming non-receipt of notices.
Motorists have the choice of accepting points for an offence and paying a fine or pusuing the matter in court.
Possible changes may include the hand delivery of notices by members of the gardaí, a change in the law or the dispatch of notices by registered mail.
