Numbers on live register falls slightly
The number of people signing on in Ireland fell slightly last month, according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office.
The CSO said the number of people on the Live Register decreased by 4,247 during March, but when seasonal factors were taken into account, the number increased by 300 to 170,400.
On an annual basis, the Live Register increased by 821 or 0.5% in the year to the end of March.
Labour Party TD Brendan Howlin said vigilance was still needed to protect existing jobs.
“It’s quite clear there are a number of pressures in the economy,” he said.
“We haven’t got rid of our own bottlenecks, such as high insurance costs and infrastructural deficiencies, and there is a greater view now of moving employment offshore that may well accelerate with the accession of new member states to the European Union."
