Leitrim farmers appeal for future of research station

02/04/2004 - 07:28:49
Farmers in Leitrim have raised fresh concerns about the closure of a research station at Ballinamore.

Protests were held at the Teagasc facility recently when farmers objected to its closure.

The shut-down and lay-off of staff was prevented however. It is now being claimed that pedigree dairy cows at the centre are having their diets reduced to destroy milk production.

It is being claimed the move is being made in an attempt to wind down the activities of the research station.

MEP for the area Dana Rosemary Scallon is calling for authorities to bring a hault to the practice and said the facility should not be closed down.
